Saving Grace
by Wendy Nolan
Acrylic on Canvas 3.8cm (D) x 75.0cm (H) x 75.0cm (W), unframed 0.5 kg
‘Saving Grace’ has an energy that penetrates its audience, guaranteeing a good time. Grace is wearing a sassy, colourful 1950's swimming cap that grabs your attention, seemingly dancing off the canvas to brighten your day.
As this painting developed I received comments that it had the feel of Pop Art. Much of Pop Art is considered incongruent, and often takes as its imagery that which is currently in use in advertising, product labeling and logos. Consider the Campbell's Soup labels, by Andy Warhol.
Going with this theme I decided that ‘Grace’ needed ‘Saving’! To this end I added some kitschy elements to the painting, a bouy and a packet of lifesavers, representing Grace’s savior.
