Intimacy came to mind when I pictured this space, closely followed by the thought of a haven or place to gather oneself.
The orient conjures up the epitome of the private sphere. Many gracious, ornamental pieces of furniture from the orient were built especially for the use of the ladies of the house. These took on many of the feminine features and symbols of the culture creating delicate, intimate spaces.
