Watercolour on paper
Signed on the back.
This artwork was created on archival cotton rag paper using watercolour pencils, and watercolour washes in shades of pink. It is a study of the painting 'Jael and Sisera' by the Italian Baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi.
My intention was to highlight the power of the arm in action, a recurring motif in Gentileschi's artworks that I wanted to explore. My artwork has been cropped to focus on the hammer and arm. I used a watercolour pencil to detail the hair and drapery of the figure depicted. Choosing the colour pink was intuitive. I used a salmon pink watercolour pencil and a rose pink watercolour wash background using a large watercolour mop brush.
