Fantasy art

Usually depicting a supernatural world full of demons, gods, centaurs and dragons, fantasy art originates from folklore and religious mythology. Although examples of fantastical artworks are prevalent throughout history in all cultures, Fantasy art as we know it has only really existed since the invention of the printing press. Illustrations for classic books such as The Lord of the Rings helped develop the distinctive style that has become very much a part of the mainstream today.

Thanks to the booming computer game and movie industries, the fantasy genre is more popular than ever. Artists explore sci-fi, surreal, mythological, unexplainable, imaginative and taboo themes creating intricate universes of awe-inspiring imagery.
