Artwork Description

The Cape Floral Kingdom in Cape Town, South Africa is the smallest and most diverse of the six floral kingdoms in the world, covering the region with over 9,000 indigenous plant species. This exhibition follows a recent trip to Cape Town where I embarked on a detailed study of the Fynbos - a specified area of natural shrubland - on Table Mountain which encompasses over 1,500 species alone, more than the entire United Kingdom. Fynbos, which is Dutch for β€œfine leaved plants”, is a unique kind of vegetation that makes up 80 percent of the Cape Floral Kingdom - two-thirds of which are not found anywhere else in the world, making the Western Cape more botanically diverse than the Amazon in South America. 1,700 of those species are currently threatened with extinction.
