The Grachtengordel.
Known as "The Venice of the North" the Canals of Amsterdam were used for defence and settlement. The stunningly beautiful and coloured houses which line the canals were built tall and skinny because the buildings were taxed on their water frontage.
They are ornately crowned with soaring gables often with a pulley tackle to haul heavy furniture from the waterway barges to the top floors.
Houseboats line the canals and many have been floating for more than a century.
I found this city interesting but very congested with bicycles and People.
I was drawn to the reflections in the water although couldn't quiet nail it.
