William Browne brought nine Indian labourers to Sydney in 1816; they were perhaps the earliest group of Indians to arrive in Australia. The 1828 Census records at least two 'free' immigrants prior to that year: Rhamut, who landed on the Favourite in 1808, and William Boxo, who sailed from Calcutta on the Mary Ann the following year. This painting is a tribute to those immigrants.
