A key element in my work is the recognition factor implicit in the use of commonplace phenomena. This establishes a starting point between the audience and the work. While I reference aspects of the ‘real’ it is always my intention that the painting surface becomes its own space rather than a pale copy. In my work I use traditional spatial reference tools such as perspective, light and shade as a further means to establish a dialogue with the audience. The first question becomes ‘what could it be?’ Instead of ‘what is it?
