This piece centres around love and what love is and means to different people. la douleur exquise is translated directly to “exquisite pain” in French - used to describe the exquisite pain of wanting someone you know you can never have.
In the artwork you will be references to love, sex, money and family - all sorts of things people love and want.
You will also find a drawing of Cupid and Psyche embracing. Their story centres around the power of true love and starts when Venus becomes jealous of Psyche, a beautiful princess. In a fit of rage, Venus sends her son Cupid to make Psyche fall in love with a monster - but this backfires when Cupid’s scratches himself with his own arrow and falls madly and deeply in love with Psyche. Psyche has never fallen in love before and has never felt love like this, with people too frightened and intimidated to approach her because of her beauty.
This Artwork is part of my Bathroom Stall Series - I explore the most honest type of vandalism. A Bathroom stall is the most private public space, allowing for people to share their thoughts, feelings and even their confessions. With their heart on their sleeve and their undies at their ankles, they add their note to a chorus of scribbles, immortalised on walls that can finally talk.
