Q: Are they flying or swimming ?
A: The answer is simple upon reflection.
A marriage of realism and surrealism. Turn this painting on its side or upside down, and the viewer may soon realise they're looking into a pond of koi fish before dusk. The last of the day's light silhouette the nearby winter-bare trees, reflected in the pond along with the drifts of cloud still visible in the sky. Tiny Momiji (Japanese maple) leaves are scattered on the surface of the water appearing like stars in the sky, mingled with aged petals of spent Sakura (Cherry Blossom). I wanted to convey in this painting, a poignant reminder of how delicate and fleeting life is ... the fish appearing to ascend into the stars on their evolutionary path while the ephemeral clouds dissipate as the day is coming to it's end.
This painting intrigues and even mesmerizes.
