Dark forests are ever-present in the human psyche: they represent places we are inherently intrigued by yet are afraid to venture into. Yet in our hearts we know if we are to move forward - from childhood to adulthood, from a place of fear to a place of certainty, from a place of despair to a place of happiness - the only path is through that dark forest.
This limited edition print is inspired by my own personal journey as I hiked through this forest: the bare branches of the trees reflected both a catastrophic historical event but also a seasonal slumbering like a breath held in anticipation of renewal.
At first such a place seems haunted by lurking memories and ill-will, unknown things we hope not to encounter. But staring through the forest and its impossible path forward, the fear of what laid it bare and perhaps laid within soon subsided with a knowing THAT was my journey and had been for a long time: I had already been through many such places to get here, now. There was nothing to be afraid of, and life will always be a struggle as long as you choose to live it.
Framed with two great trees on either side which represented a doorway, and yet the path thicketed by bare branches that make the way impenetrable: an abstract representation of the unknowns in our life that often keep us still and secluded rather than journeying forward and discovering.
