Artwork Description

Acrylic on canvas, stretched and ready to hang.

Signed on the front.

In 2019 I travelled to Wittenberg, Germany, strolling the beautiful streets and enjoying the rich history of the town. This painting is based on a photograph which I took in Kirchplatz, Wittenberg, and I thought that the mixture of shadows and leaves would be perfect for a painting. This piece captures the sunny mood of Wittenberg and it's clouds against the blue skies create a refreshing atmosphere.

With a grey to white descending gradient, the sky acts as a backdrop to a dramatic leaning building. The rounded walls of the Guggenheim descend from larger to small, resting upon a final cubic structure which stretches to the corner of the piece.

The texture of the palette-knife-applied acrylic paint is rough, and loose, yet the angles and forms are highly accurate. The Shapes are correct but the surfaces are rough, showing quick and flowing movement from the knife. This painting captures a moment, walking along the great hall of the Great Market Hall in Budapest. You can see friends chatting as they walk, window shoppers looking at what they might buy in the stalls and others simply strolling along enjoying the atmosphere of the market. The perspective painting has a vanishing point looking towards the entrance of the market. The colours are warm browns, yellow and oranges with dark iron metal work of the market structure. The tiled floor is cream and blue and the path way through the market is lit by spherical street lamps that illuminate the walk ways. There is lots of activity and colour in each of the market shops. The inspiration for this painting was taking on a European cultural experience with my family as we were travelling Europe. It was a lovely cultural experience of shopping in Hungary and a window into Hungarian life.
