In this digital reimagining of Esaias Boursse's "Interior with Woman Cooking", I invite viewers to reflect on the enduring constraints imposed on women's roles in society. By substituting the original painting's baby with a cat, I allude to the independent yet scrutinized nature of women, paralleling the feline's perceived autonomy. The woman, positioned before 17th century Dutch social commentator Jacob Cat's prescriptive writings, embodies the ongoing struggle against rigid social expectations. The artwork serves as a poignant reminder that the journey towards true equality and freedom from archaic stereotypes is still very much a work in progress.
