Without the moon, life would be very different. The Moon makes Earth a more livable planet by moderating our home planet's wobble on its axis, leading to a relatively stable climate. It also causes tides, creating a rhythm that has guided humans for thousands of years.
At about one-quarter the diameter of Earth (comparable to the width of Australia), it is the fifth largest satellite in the Solar System , and larger than any known dwarf planet.
It lacks any significant atmosphere, hydrosphere, or magnetic field. Its surface gravity is about one-sixth of Earth's.
The most widely accepted origin explanation posits that the Moon formed about 4.5 billion years ago, not long after Earth, out of the debris from a giant impact between the planet and a hypothesized Mars-sized body.
