Artwork Description

Oil on canvas, stretched and ready to hang.

Signed on the front.

As a regular traveller to Africa for experiencing the wildlife in the capacity as an artist and conservationist, the one subject that inspires me other than the fauna is the dramatic sky. Just after the flooding of the Chobe river in Botswana some years ago, there was an eerie atmosphere as the Marabou storks perched in the trees on the its banks. The colours are those of the evening sky with the last light twinkling through the trees creating silhouettes of the birds and river bank . The drama is created with the strong tonal contrast dramatising the moment before nightfall and the approaching nocturnal wildlife hunting. Oil paint as a traditional time-tested archival medium, allows me to capture the luminous quality of the light behind the clouds, in layers that build the image into an artwork that remains timeless for both the imagery and the medium.

The soft, cuddly image of the Koala is what we all think of when it is referred to. The tragic images of this exceptionally quiet and harmless, tree-dwelling marsupial is what comes to mind when we remember the wildfires of Christmas 2019. We all can become numb with images of tragedy and destruction of life in any form....but we need to remember the fragility of of ecosystems and by celebrating the beauty of nature, i want to remind my audience of what could be lost. So creating art that celebrates beauty in nature, is an optimistic way of spreading that message.

Dramatic skies of Kenya can be clear and cobalt blue one moment and by late afternoon with the wet season approaching, suddenly the dramatic large white clouds gather and the distant crack of thunder and flash of lightning can be felt. Sudden changes, movement replacing the earlier calm, all remind us of how nature mimics the realities of the African nations, and there lies the narrative. The subject of the Iron Fairy is the bronze nude set into an iconic Australian landscape with a foreground of wildflowers combining the traditional techniques of oil painting on board with lost-wax bronze casting. The visual interest is as much in the painted depiction of the iconic Apostles off the coast of Victoria as it is in the bronze nude, with wings to lift her out of the background window of landscape into the foreground cover of wildflowers.Inspired by the natural beauty of our flora and fauna, ReAwakening gathers together several dozen different specimens of Australian Wildflowers into a larger than life group portrait. The extravaganza of colour is reminiscent of the corals and turquoise waters of the Great Barrier Reef immersing the viewer into the mural. in a much greater than life size composition highlights their individual and unique forms by against one of a different shape and size.
