As a regular traveller to Africa for experiencing the wildlife in the capacity as an artist and conservationist, the one subject that inspires me other than the fauna is the dramatic sky. Just after the flooding of the Chobe river in Botswana some years ago, there was an eerie atmosphere as the Marabou storks perched in the trees on the its banks. The colours are those of the evening sky with the last light twinkling through the trees creating silhouettes of the birds and river bank . The drama is created with the strong tonal contrast dramatising the moment before nightfall and the approaching nocturnal wildlife hunting. Oil paint as a traditional time-tested archival medium, allows me to capture the luminous quality of the light behind the clouds, in layers that build the image into an artwork that remains timeless for both the imagery and the medium.
