ARTWORK STORY
“Look up,” Nonna said, “Each star is the heart of a dream–a wish, a goal, a love, a moment of wonder kindled and engraved on the firmament.”
Catherine looked up at the stars and felt dizzy. She didn’t know what a firmament was, but there were a lot of stars up there. How many, she wondered and tried to count them all, but when she got to eleven, twelve, a hundred, she ran out of numbers “Nonna?” she said.
“Hmm?”
“Which star is yours?”
They were outside, cooking dinner in the outside kitchen where Nonna made dinner every night. Catherine had the important job of passing the ingredients to Nonna when she asked for them. At the moment, Nonna didn’t need anything. She stirred the pot with a big wooden spoon which she held in her wrinkly hands. Nonna scooped up some sauce and gently blew the heat off, then she held the spoon out to Catherine. Steam curled off the red sauce and swirled sweetly in her face. Catherine gave it a blow like Nonna did, then slurped it up.
“Mmm, Yum.”
“What does it need, bella?”
“Nothing.” Catherine said but she waited for Nonna to tell her. Using her big spoon, Nonna scooped out another spoonful and blew the heat off before trying it herself. She smiled, then gently tapped Catherine on her forehead with the spoon leaving red sauce on her face.
“Nonna!” Catherine laughed and wiped the sauce off her face with her sleeve. Nonna adjusted some dials and the little flames under the pot turned small
“Now, bella. All it needs is time.”
